Active Travel Scheme - Abington Park, Northampton
West Northamptonshire Council is delivering a programme of improvements along the Abington corridor to make it safer, easier and more accessible for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
This scheme forms part of the corridor which will eventually connect Northampton town centre, Abington Park and Weston Favell, supporting healthier and more sustainable journeys and better access to everyday destinations.
This scheme supports the wider objectives of the Northampton Local Cycling and Walking Plan (LCWIP) and is designed to encourage more people to choose active and sustainable ways of travelling, helping to reduce congestion and lower carbon emissions, while supporting healthier lifestyles.
Overview
- Location: Abington corridor, Northampton
- Project deliver: 3 phases
- Consultations:
- Spring 2023
- Winter 2025
- Current phase: Phase 2 (in delivery)
- Works start: 8 June 2026
- Expected completion: Autumn 2026 (around 20 weeks)
Delivery in phases
Phase 1 delivered safety and crossing improvements for pedestrians and cyclists at the Billing Road junction and was completed in 2024.
Phase 2 - Park Avenue South and Bridgewater Drive (in delivery)
Phase 2 focuses on improving walking, wheeling and cycling routes along Park Avenue South linking to Billing Road, as well as along Bridgewater Drive to Bridgewater Drive Primary School.
This phase will deliver:
- improved footpaths providing safer, more comfortable and accessible walking routes for residents, visitors and those with mobility or visual impairments
- dedicated, segregated cycle lanes and routes, providing safer, more direct connections for cyclists
- a clearer and more consistent road layout, with improved kerb lines, surfacing, markings and separation between different users
- better organised parking provision, including defined parking areas and layout changes to support safer movement along the route
Construction will be carried out in stages to help reduce disruption as much as possible, but some temporary traffic management, road closures and diversions will be needed. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained during the works.
West Northamptonshire Council and Kier are committed to keeping people updated throughout the works. Residents and businesses in the area will receive regular information, including letters, on-site signage and online information.
Updates will be provided via Abington Active Travel and information regarding traffic management can be found by visiting one.network.
Phase 3 - Abington Park Crescent and King Edward Road (under review)
Phase 3 was consulted on in Winter 2025. Feedback raised significant concerns about traffic impacts, parking, access and junction operation. As a result, the previously consulted design will not be taken forward in its current form.
Alternative options are now being reviewed, working with Active Travel England. No final decisions have been made.
Public consultation has played an important role in shaping the scheme:
Spring 2023
Consultation on the overall corridor scheme (including Phase 2).
Winter 2025
Consultation on Phase 3 proposals.
A report on the Winter 2025 Phase 3 consultation is expected to be published in June 2026.
Funding
The scheme is funded through the Active Travel Fund, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and local transport funding.
